My high school's Aerospace Engineering class was invited by Lockheed Martin to go to their space day event! When our teacher told us about it we were all super excited to go as we were just talking about some of the fighter jets Lockheed makes in our prior periods.
Once the day came I drove down to Lockheed on my own while most of my other classmates took a van with our teacher. Once we got in we were all given lanyards with our names of them and then we all went down to the auditorium together. During the first half hour we played a kahoot with the other schools who were there then we listened to a systems engineer and one of the VP's of finances give a talk to us. It was awesome to hear everyone talk about Lockheed and all of the super cool things they do, in relation to space.
After the talks were over we were put into to five separate groups of about 15 to go through the different stations they had set up for us. My favorite station was the drone station that where we went outside and took turns flying a drone and the goal was to land it on a target about 20 ft. away. There were two targets we could aim for one was larger and a bit closer while the other was smaller but worth more points if you landed it on the target. Once it was mine turn I decided to go for the target that was slighter closer because of how windy it was on that day, and the two kids who tried before me did not get close to the far target. This ended up paying off for me as I landed the drone right in the middle of the target for full points!
Another cool station we did was the straw rocket stations. For this station we used a small piece of paper that wrapped around a straw and was closed off at one end. We also added four fins on the end for station. It was fun to compete against the other students there to see whos straw rocket could go the furthest. Those were my two favorite stations we did however the other three were still super fun and cool to do. The other three stations we did were, a gum drop/toothpick bridge, 3D modeling/tech station, and making bracelets for military troops.
All in all the Lockheed Martin Space Day was an awesome experience and I am super grateful I was able to be a part of it! I am now currently in the process of applying to Lockheed's summer High School Internship Program!
